Erie Canal – Brewerton, New York- June 2, 2014

Day 94
Miles Today: 36 SM; Total Miles: 1,965 SM
Locks Today: 2 ; Total Locks: 29

We had a weather window so we took it- heavy rains expected tonight for the next 24 hours. We left Rome at 6:50 a.m. on a clear and sunny morning. Only 2 locks and then cross Oneida Lake.

Lock 21 and Lock 22 were the first locks we had where we would be “locking down”, each of them 25 feet. So we entered the lock chamber where the water was high, grabbed the line and then dropped 25 feet.

After clearing the two locks it was a short ride until we entered Oneida Lake, the largest lake on The Erie Canal. The lake runs east- west for about 20 miles. It was a nice day with light winds from the SW so we had 1 foot seas on the stern for most of the trip….nice. Across the lake, we entered the town of Brewerton, NY.

We arrived at the Ess-Kay Marina about noon. After getting the boat tied up Captain Steve worked to get the lock “mud and muck” off the boat.

We were invited to dinner with Loopers Ron and Jan (Adagio) and Ken and Ann (Charis). We enjoyed a nice dinner at Castaways and swapped looper stories. It was a nice evening.

We’ll be staying here for a couple of day for routine maintenance (engine oil changes), provisioning and rest.
