Marathon, Fl and Regina’s Birthday

Marathon, Fl
It was Regina’s birthday so she got to plan the day for our group. First was a “planning meeting” at the Stuffed Pig (a planning meeting was our excuse for a great breakfast at a local diner). Then Island Time and Sorry Kids headed out for an early afternoon dive at Samantha Reef, and then on to Sombrero Reef. We cooked hot dogs on the grill and waited for dark so we could do a night dive at Sombrero Reef.

While waiting for it to get dark enough for our night dive, we enjoyed wonderful sunset with the Sombrero Reef Lighthouse in the background.
It had been many years since we had made a night dive and it was fun. Each of us had glow sticks attached to our scuba tanks so we could see each other. With flashlights in hand, we began exploring the reef seeing fish and creatures that are normally hidden from view in the daytime. It was a nice dive and pretty uneventful until we were making our assent. Heading for the stern of the boat, we came within a couple of feet of a large barracuda. We were startled more than the barracuda and I was ready to get back on the boat. All in all, it was a great way to spend a birthday!
